Warning Signs

In addition to routine maintenance, many horses will experience dental problems throughout their lives. As an owner it may be difficult to tell if you horse has dental issues but some of the symptoms may include:


· Balling up partially chewed hay and spitting it out
· Dropping feed
· Choke
· Colic
· Unwillingness to work in a contact when ridden or not accepting the rein on one side.
· Packing grass and hay into cheeks.
· Rearing and other unusual behaviour
· Loss of condition and difficulty keeping weight on
· Head shaking when ridden
· Excessive drooling and salivation
· Unpleasant smell from the mouth
· Reluctance to eat
· Discharge from the eyes, nasal passage or jaw
· Overall loss of performance
